Every name with its source

Sanskrit baby names, A to Z

5,266 Sanskrit names, each with the meaning a dated dictionary records for its word — Monier-Williams (1899), Apte (1890) or Wilson (1832) — or a derivation the site's engine has verified, and a link to the page that shows the evidence.

The names come from the 13 Sahasranāma hymns the site has loaded and are listed as the hymns recite them, so many stand in the dative form a nāmāvalī uses — akalmaṣāya, “to the stainless one”. The meaning shown is the dictionary's entry for the word itself.

The site holds 10,961 name pages in all. The 5,695 names the dictionaries do not list as headwords — mostly long compound epithets — are on the deity lists, each with its place in its hymn.
