Attested in the Vedas

Vedic baby names

On this site “Vedic” means attested in the Vedas: a name is on this list when Monier-Williams (1899) cites its word from a Vedic Saṃhitā — the Ṛgveda, Atharvaveda, Sāmaveda or the Yajurveda recensions (Vājasaneyi, Taittirīya, Maitrāyaṇī, Kāṭhaka) — or from a Brāhmaṇa. The Sahasranāma hymns the names come from are later texts — the epics, the Purāṇas, the Tantras — so a name's place in one of them is not what makes it Vedic here, and “Vedic” on this site is never a style of name.

1,571 of the site's 10,961 published names meet that test; 995 of them are cited from the Ṛgveda itself. Each row names the Vedic text Monier-Williams cites, in his abbreviation; the meaning is his entry for the word the name is formed from.
